Subtle hints in his paintings seem to suggest that Steen meant to warn the viewer rather than invite him to copy this behaviour. Steen was not one to stay put; he lived in The Hague; Haarlem; Leyden, where he ran a tavern; and Delft, where he leased a brewery.

Other sources of inspiration were Adriaen van Ostade and Isaac van Ostadepainters of rural scenes, who lived in Haarlem. It does not seem to be clear if this painting should be called a portrait or a genre work.

Steen is best known for his humorous genre scenes, warm hearted and animated works in which he treats life as a vast comedy of manners.

Jan Havickszoon Steen c. Although he was born and died in Leiden, Steen moved around a good deal and spent much of his career in The Hague and Haarlem. Theater as a source of inspiration came through both in his style and choice of subject. After the death of his wife Margriet inSteen moved to Leiden.

However, it is more likely that Steen understood, that this was a way to position and promote himself as a comic painter. He was a master at capturing subtleties of facial expression, especially in children. In April he married Maria van Egmont, who gave him another child.

In he married Maria van Egmond, with whom he had a son shortly after. He shows them playing cards or the bowling game called skittlesor carousing, as in Skittle Players Outside an Inn c.

Steen was prolific, producing about paintings, of which roughly survive. Soon after he became an assistant to the renowned landscape painter Jan van Goyen —and moved into his house on the Bierkade in The Hague. His frequent use of inns probably reflects his own background as the son of a brewer and sometime brewer and tavernkeeper himself.

During the late s and s, Steen produced more biblical paintings than in earlier stages of his career, like Samson and Delilah and Wedding Feast at Cana ca. Steen lived in The Hague untiland then moved to Delft, where he leased a brewery from a local brewer.

Whether Steen actually studied with Ostade is not known. While Steen continued to sell paintings, it was not enough to support his family, and the brewery became another source of income.Canvas Artwork by Jan Steen | iCanvasPremium Canvas Art · 60 Day Money Back · Made in USA.
